Adventure

Trevor & Courtney

When Courtney messaged me about an upcoming anniversary with Trevor, I openly asked if they were willing to do something a little crazy. Courtney responded “I love crazy”. The Coquihalla is the highway that leads to BC’s heart. It is lined with deep forested mountains. The trees braving the cliff sides as waterfalls pull through the roots and feed the rivers below. I knew there was a hike around there and I was determined to find it, along with wondering what it would look like if we could watch the sun rise from that altitude. Planning was the most important part because there was no service, lights or signs to know if we were at the right spot, especially at 3:00 AM. Luckily, with the offbeat directions, we found each other! They were just a dimly lit headlamp in the distance from where we parked. The darkness surrounded us as we proceeded through the wooded area, our lights only illuminating the bark of a couple feet around us. After an hour we noticed the trees becoming more sparse when we reached a rocky plateau. We could see a dim outline revealing the backs of the mountains, giving us clues to where we were. The black became a cool blue as we scaled the rocky summit, Courtney took off her shoes to get a better grip on the mountain face. Passing dark rock caves, finding our footing through steep, crumbly pathways, tossing our packs to Eric so we can freely climb boulders, we arrived. The blue grew warmer in the distance and we all took a break. Eric unpacked a small camping stove and metal espresso maker and began brewing everyone a cup of coffee. As the sun rose, I sneakily took out my camera as they were snuggled up on the rock, capturing the celebration of their union.
